National Doula Initiative
Setting:
Large Medicaid Payor
In 2020, our team recognized doula support as a key opportunity within Medicaid programs. After thorough market research, we designed an adaptive program to offer doula access across the company’s 20+ markets.
The diverse landscape across states and limited resources of our partner health plans necessitated a faceted and accessible strategy. In response, the team developed a comprehensive playbook outlining coverage models, decision frameworks, and thought leadership for health plans to implement a model that best fit their resources—covered benefit, value-added / in-lieu-of service, or pilot program—then partnered to successfully bring it to life.
In response to six states that did not have resources to independently offer doula coverage, we built a centralized and scalable pilot, secured program funding, selected an administrative partner, and integrated processes across care management and local doulas.
The initiative drove 50x growth in doula-supported births at this payor from 2021 to mid-2024, and became the highest-performing clinical and quality program in the company’s perinatal health portfolio. It garnered deep interest from the company’s other business lines, Medicaid agencies, and external partners.
Despite challenges like the public health emergency and Medicaid redeterminations we stayed true to our client’s needs, successfully navigated complex issues, and drove significant growth, demonstrating Hypha’s strength to innovate under pressure.
